Healthcare

U.S. hospitals and healthcare facilities consume approximately 9% of energy consumption in U.S. commercial buildings while occupying 4% of total commercial floorspace.  While a considerable amount of consumption is due to the energy intensity of medical care, as much as 30% could be saved at a typical hospital — with no sacrifice in comfort or safety — by following best practices and upgrading to efficient equipment.

Hundreds of healthcare organizations have used ENERGY STAR tools like Portfolio Manager to identify underperforming buildings, set goals, and demonstrate top performance by achieving ENERGY STAR certification.

Get Help Saving Energy

Hospitals and other health care spaces can receive a 1 – 100 ENERGY STAR score, which is a comparative metric that rates your property’s energy performance relative to similar properties nationwide.

Assess Building Efficiency and Validate Improvements

You can’t manage what you don’t measure, which is why benchmarking is the first step. Healthcare organizations can use ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager to get a meaningful assessment of how efficiently their buildings are using energy. The tool is free, online, and secure, and allows users to benchmark hospitals, medical offices, clinics, ambulatory surgical centers, and more.

Resources for Saving Energy in Healthcare

After benchmarking, you’ll have a better understanding of which properties to target for cost-saving energy-efficiency improvements. Bring in an expert to conduct a building audit to identify opportunities or assemble your team and conduct an Energy Treasure Hunt.

ENERGY STAR certification

Top-performing properties may be eligible to earn ENERGY STAR certification, which is awarded to the most energy-efficient buildings in the country. ENERGY STAR certified hospitals use 35% less energy and emit 35% less GHG emissions than the typical hospital, on average.

ENERGY STAR® NextGen™

EPA is introducing a new level of certification: ENERGY STAR® NextGen™. It will recognize energy-efficient, low-emissions buildings. Learn more about ENERGY STAR NextGen.
