20-percent recognition through the ENERGY STAR National Building Competition

Each year, EPA hosts the ENERGY STAR National Building Competition, a coast-to-coast contest among commercial buildings to see who can reduce their energy waste the most. Styled after The Biggest Loser, competing buildings "step on the scale" by benchmarking their energy use in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Competitors track their progress and participate in a mid-point weigh-in. Then, at the end of the competition, the building that reduces its energy use the most on a percentage basis is declared the winner.

In addition to the biggest loser, EPA recognizes several other winner categories through the competition. While every season is a little different, if you achieve a 20-percent reduction during the year-long competition, you’ll be eligible for recognition from EPA.
