Make 2016 Your Greenest Year Yet: Office Edition

Bring Your Green to Work with ENERGY STAR logo.

With 2015 winding down, it’s time to make your New Year’s resolutions for 2016! You may have already jotted down your goals – learn a new language, eat healthier, or clean out that garage you’ve been avoiding – but let’s not forget about your green goals. You may already make energy efficiency a priority at home, but don’t forget to take those ideas to work with you!

Did you know, the places where we work account for nearly half the nation’s energy use? On average, commercial buildings (offices, schools, stores) waste 30 percent of the energy they use. And remember, buildings don’t use energy, people do!

Here are three simple steps to green your second home—your workplace—in 2016!

  • Maximize daylighting. Exposure to natural light at work has been shown to boost performance and improve sleep[1]. And best of all, sunlight is free! Opt for natural light, and turn off the artificial lights when you can to save on lighting and heating costs.
  • Enable the power management function on your office computer(s). These settings automatically put computers to sleep when not in use. On average, activating the power management setting on your computer can cut annual energy use by $10–50!
  • Deploy "Smart" Power Strips. Consider using "smart" power strips to reduce the power consumed by task lighting, computer accessories, fans, space heaters, and other miscellaneous plug loads in cubicles and offices. Did you know that electronic products continue to draw power from the wall even when they are powered off? Since it's not always practical to unplug these items whenever you leave your desk, "smart" power strips can effectively do so for you!

Now take these tips and make 2016 your greenest year yet!
