“Rule Your Attic!” Consumer Outreach Campaign Launches

ENERGY STAR encourages homeowners to increase their homes’ comfort and energy efficiency this heating season by measuring their attic insulation and making improvements.
This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program launches its second annual “Rule Your Attic!” with ENERGY STAR consumer awareness campaign. The campaign encourages homeowners to measure their attic insulation levels, take photos or shoot videos of their insulation and attics, and post the content on ENERGY STAR’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Those posting photos are encouraged to use the #RuleYourAttic hashtag. As homeowners post photos, ENERGY STAR will offer expert advice through follow-up posts and replies.
“In houses across America, poorly sealed and under-insulated attics are taking money out of homeowner’s pockets due to high utility bills,” said Jonathan Passe, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Residential Branch. The “Rule Your Attic!” campaign educates and engages homeowners on how sealing and insulating their attics can make their homes more energy efficient. That means lower utility bills and greater comfort - and fewer of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.”
Advice from ENERGY STAR’s home improvement experts will help guide homeowners on next steps – including shopping for materials and products, sealing air leaks and adding more insulation, or hiring a contractor. ENERGY STAR will also provide additional information and resources on attic air sealing and insulation on its website, including illustrations, blogs, and new Do-it-Yourself videos. These short videos will feature an ENERGY STAR insulation expert performing simple energy efficiency improvement projects, including how to measure attic insulation levels and how to identify and properly seal air leaks in the attic. ENERGY STAR estimates that sealing air leaks and adding insulation can save homeowners up to 10 percent on their annual energy bills.
The campaign, which runs from October 1 through November 20, provides program partners and stakeholders, including insulation manufacturers, home improvement retailers, and utility program sponsors, with an ENERGY STAR marketing platform to promote sealing and insulation products and services and to educate consumers on the benefits of correctly sealing and insulating their homes.
