Fannie Mae is a federally sponsored financial institution for multifamily housing. Fannie Mae has continued to expand its green financing programs, raising awareness of the benefits of ENERGY STAR® certification in the multifamily housing market and reaching thousands of owners and tenants. Key 2023 accomplishments include:

  • Convening and deploying the 2023 Multifamily Energy and Water Survey, aiming to gather enough multifamily property data to update the ENERGY STAR 1–100 score, resulting in property utility data for nearly 2,300 properties across 47 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Hosting four Green Financing Lender Learning Series webinars, each reaching more than 250 multifamily finance professionals with education and strategies to meet organizational sustainability goals, local building performance standards, and greenhouse gas emissions targets at multifamily properties.
  • Resuming the Fannie Mae Multifamily Green Road Show, conducting 53 meetings with 585 lenders in seven major markets, promoting Green Rewards and Green Building Certification financing programs.
  • Expanding the Single-Family Green Homes Database of ENERGY STAR certified properties by partnering with more third-party data providers and making operational enhancements. This widened Fannie Mae’s scope of eligible certified homes, allowing for more timely verification of ENERGY STAR certified properties.
  • Increasing partnership and instituting regular communication with participating single-family lenders/builders to establish better mechanisms to identify ENERGY STAR certified homes.
In 2020 ENERGY STAR and its partners helped Americans avoid more than $40 Billion in energy costs
