Commercial Cooktops

For Partners

Why ENERGY STAR?

Commercial electric cooktops are common appliances in the foodservice industry used for cooking, sauteing, grilling, boiling, and simmering. Depending on the technology employed by the cooktop, many electric cooktops offer additional benefits (i.e., reduced risk of heat stress and reduced ventilation rates). Commercial electric cooktops that have earned the ENERGY STAR are about 5 percent more energy efficient (per hob) than standard electric models.

Eligible commercial electric cooktops can earn the ENERGY STAR by meeting minimum cooking (boil) energy efficiency of 80 percent. Cooking energy efficiency represents the amount of energy absorbed by the water compared to the total energy used by the cooktop during the heat-up (boil) process. Additionally, a commercial electric range may be certified if the commercial cooktop portion of the unit meets the criteria set forth in this specification and the commercial electric oven portion is certified to the ENERGY STAR Commercial Ovens specification version currently in effect.

Savings figures:

  • About 5% more energy efficient than standard electric models, per hob
  • An ENERGY STAR certified commercial electric cooktop saves businesses about $20 annually (per hob) and $170 on utility bills over the product's lifetime when compared to standard electric models
  • An ENERGY STAR certified commercial electric cooktop saves businesses about 180 kWh annually (per hob)

Eligible products:

  • Commercial electric cooktops (e.g., induction, open coil, French top, hot top)
  • Commercial electric ranges

Ineligible products:

  • Residential cooking tops and ranges
  • Gas ranges
  • Gas cooktops (e.g., gas hot tops, open top gas burners)
  • Griddles or planchas
  • Soup wells
  • Woks
  • Dedicated warming/holding equipment
