ENERGY STAR Focus on Energy Efficiency in Ready Mix Concrete Manufacturing

The “ready mixed concrete focus” is a partnership between EPA’s ENERGY STAR program, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) and U.S. concrete producers to improve energy efficiency within their operations. Tools are available here to help improve manufacturing energy efficiency, save money, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Concrete producers can get started on a path of saving energy by using the ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management to build an energy management program, and then work within this ready mixed concrete focus to learn best practices from the industry. If you are a concrete producer who wants to get involved in your industry’s efforts to save energy, contact energystrategy@energystar.gov.

Plant energy performance indicator (EPI) tool

A ready mixed concrete plant EPI is under testing. Help is needed in reviewing the EPI before it can be finalized. If you are interested in providing testing assistance, please Gale Boyd at Duke University at gale.boyd@duke.edu.

When complete, the EPI will enable producers to assess how efficiently a ready mixed concrete plant uses energy, relative to similar plants in the U.S. The EPI will provide a plant a 1 - 100 ENERGY STAR score for a quick understanding of how the plant is performing. Plants receiving a score of 75 or higher are eligible to earn ENERGY STAR certification.

Plant energy guide

Use the concrete plant energy guide Energy Efficiency Improvement and Cost Saving Opportunities for the Concrete Industry to find ways to improve the energy performance of a concrete plant.

Energy Treasure Hunt

An Energy Treasure Hunt is a form of assessment that engages employees to identify low cost or no cost energy saving opportunities by focusing on improving the day-to-day operations of existing equipment. Focus on uncovering operational and non-capital opportunities using the ENERGY STAR Treasure Map for Ready Mixed Concrete Plants.
