Salt River Materials Group (SRMG), comprised of Phoenix Cement Company and Salt River Sand and Rock, is a regional supplier of Portland cements, gypsum, fly ash, natural pozzolans, and aggregate products.  Headquartered at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's Chaparral Business Park near Scottsdale, Arizona, SRMG takes pride in its commitment to environmental stewardship and maintains an active environmental program designed to monitor and manage environmental matters throughout the company.  As a leader in promoting sustainable products and practices in its industries, SRMG has helped pioneer the use of recycled materials, using its uniquely integrated experience and expertise in the development of new applications.  In 2007 a full energy management plan for all SRMG business units was put in place with senior executive support.  Since then SRMG has been recognized as an energy leader in the industry.

5.2: Raise Awareness

Engaging Others in Energy Management

Salt River Materials Group hosts plant tours that showcase the projects and practices the company has implemented to achieve energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. As a result, the guests are able to learn about the benefits the ENERGY STAR partnership offers and how it is advancing industries to become leaders in energy management and sustainability. Typical guests of the tours include cement manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, executives of industry associations, state representatives, state senators, governors, environmental policy advisors, and representatives from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, State Land Department, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency and Bureau of Land Management.
 

 

5.3: Build Capacity

Using Virtual Technology for Trainings and Meetings

Since 2007 Salt River Materials Group (SRMG) has implemented projects and practices for reducing its energy use.  One in particular has been using "Go to Meeting" for a lot of their company-wide trainings and meetings.  The savings this has provided SRMG for a period of 12 months includes 52,377 miles, 50,701 pounds of carbon dioxide, and 2,618 gallons of fuel.

Employee Incentives for Practicing Energy Management

Salt River Materials Group's Sustainability Working Group has two programs designed to incite employees to save energy.  One program is called the "Green Value" program and cash incentives are paid based on the fuel efficiency of the vehicle the employee purchases.  The other is a cash incentive that covers up to $100 per employee per year for the purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified lights or local utility sponsored home energy audits.
