10% Improvement (2013)

Located in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, El Monte Union High School District, established in 1901, educates more than 10,000 students in grades 9 through 12 across more than 1.4 million square feet of floor space. El Monte Union High School District is committed to educational excellence through financial stewardship and environmental responsibility and maintains its motto of Every Student, Every Minute, Every Day. The districts energy conservation program supports this cause by promoting a culture of using only what we need and staff members are committed to taking ownership of resources and maximizing each dollar. In partnering with ENERGY STAR in 2012, the district set the bar high for saving energy and considers it an honor to be a named leader in energy efficiency.

El Monte High School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving the energy efficiency of its facilities by more than 10 percent compared to a 2011 baseline. This was a great start for the district and validates the conscious efforts made by the school and community. The district has improved energy efficiency by implementing lighting upgrades, adding motion sensors, and conducting HVAC repairs. The district has avoided utility costs of $386,000 in 14 months, money that can now go back to the classroom for teachers and students. Compared to its baseline, the district currently prevents the emissions of more than 600 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 15,300 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
