Cambridge-Isanti Independent School District 911 educates approximately 5,000 students in buildings that encompass more than 908,000 square feet of space in the Minnesota cities of Cambridge and Isanti. The districts mission is to help all students develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to reach their full potential as successful, independent, life-long learners, and responsible citizens in our changing world. The district assessed the energy performance of all of its schools and underwent significant facility improvements to improve its energy efficiency. The district also engaged staff and students in energy-saving activities. Since 2004, Cambridge-Isanti Schools have partnered with Schools for Energy Efficiency (SEE) to meet the districts goal of saving 10 percent on energy costs. The district became an ENERGY STAR Partner in 2005.

Cambridge-Isanti Independent School District 911 has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Top Performer for earning a portfolio-wide average ENERGY STAR 1-100 score of 86. In 2010, the district earned recognition as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving energy performance by 30 percent compared to a 2004 baseline. These savings were achieved by using a combination of operational and awareness campaign strategies. The district changed all metal halides to high bay fluorescents in school gyms and all T12 bulbs to efficient T8 bulbs in hallways and classrooms. The district has been working to replace HVAC equipment with more energy-efficient systems and is fine tuning the automation systems to run more efficiently. Automatic shutoff and sleep modes have been installed in technology equipment. Cambridge-Isanti administrators have discovered that the benefits of participating in an energy efficiency program include both fiscal responsibility and the engagement of students and staff members on the importance of saving energy and fighting climate change. Cambridge-Isanti Schools have saved more than $2.7 million since its 2004 baseline year. Compared to its baseline year, the district currently prevents the emissions of more than 2,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 54,100 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
