The Whittier City School District (WCSD) is located approximately 19 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, CA. The district educates 6,200 elementary and middle school students across more than 495,000 square feet of floor space. WCSD's mission is to provide a safe, caring, and nurturing environment that ensures high student achievement in all subject areas, with a special focus on literacy, mathematics, and the use of technology by high-quality, supportive staff members. WCSD is committed to developing compassionate, responsible citizens who will be confident, creative, and productive members of a global society. Whittier City School District became an ENERGY STAR Partner in 2012.

 

Whittier City School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Top Performer for earning an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 97 across its portfolio of buildings. In fact, all schools in the district's portfolio earned the ENERGY STAR in 2012. Successful conservation measures have included: an increasing focus on maintaining energy systems and equipment; reviewing and modifying indoor and outdoor lighting schedules; applying thermostat set points; and modifying individual behaviors on a daily basis. The district's energy savings earned more than $128,000 in the first performance year of its Energy Program. Compared to a 2010 baseline, Whittier City School District is preventing the annual emissions of more than 100 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is equal to the emissions sequestered by more than 3,000 tree seedlings planted and grown for ten years.
