Ashwaubenon School District educates approximately 3,100 students in school buildings totaling more than 700,000 square feet of floor space. The district is located in the Village of Ashwaubenon, a suburban community adjacent to Green Bay, Wisconsin. The village, which currently has a population of 18,000, is approximately 110 miles north of Milwaukee. Since its founding over 100 years ago as an agricultural community, Ashwaubenon has grown into an excellent area for residential living as well as industrial and commercial business. In 2009, Ashwaubenon School District adopted an energy policy and contracted Energy Education, Inc. (EEI) to improve energy efficiency.  The district recognizes the importance of energy efficiency and encourages students, faculty members, and community members to become involved in its energy management plan. The district's commitment to energy efficiency includes a partnership with ENERGY STAR that began in 2009.

 

Ashwaubenon School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving energy efficiency by more than 10 percent compared to a 2009 baseline and as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 98 across its portfolio of buildings. The increase in energy efficiency has reduced operating costs, allowing the district to redirect funds back into educational programs. The district has made a major commitment to increase energy efficiency by retrofitting its buildings with ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and energy-saving building materials. In 2010, EEI presented the district with the Award for Energy Stewardship. This award recognized the district's efforts to implement an innovative, behavior-based energy conservation and management program. The program has saved the district over $202,800 in utility costs. Compared to its 2009 baseline, the district currently prevents the annual emissions of more than 600 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 14,600 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
