Livonia Public Schools in Michigan educates 16,300 students in 28 school and child development facilities totaling approximately 2.9 million square feet of floor space. To demonstrate its commitment to using resources wisely, Livonia Public Schools took the ENERGY STAR Challenge to improve energy efficiency by 10 percent or more and is an ENERGY STAR partner.

 

Livonia Public Schools has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving its district-wide energy efficiency by more than 20 percent compared to a 2007 baseline and as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 87 across its portfolio of buildings. Since 2007, the district has reduced its overall energy consumption by 100,120,000 kbtu or almost 22 percent and eliminated almost 12,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. On a cost basis, this represents a savings of more than $2 million or over $2,100 per day. Twenty-one buildings in the district have also earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. The district's success in improving energy efficiency began with a commitment by the Superintendent and Board of Education who entered into a partnership with Energy Education Incorporated. An Energy Conservation Program was created to meet the unique and specific needs of the school community. Successful efficiency measures have included: increased focus on maintenance of energy systems and equipment; upgrading lighting systems, adding occupancy sensors to control lighting and HVAC equipment, reviewing and modifying all HVAC equipment schedules and thermostat set points, conducting detailed weekly energy audits, educating staff about how they can participate, and communicating the district's successes with the community as a whole.
