Baldwinsville Central School District is located in central New York, 20 minutes northwest of Syracuse and educates about 6,000 students in eight school buildings, representing more than 800,000 square feet of floor space. The district's mission is to provide every student with the educational experiences and opportunities that will foster the full development of his or her potential. The administration believes it is the responsibility of all members of the educational community to dedicate themselves to providing a healthy, safe learning environment. The district recognizes the importance of energy efficiency and strives to promote environmental awareness throughout the Baldwinsville community. This mentality led to the establishment of a District Sustainability Committee in January 2009, whose purpose is to actively seek cost-effective opportunities to incorporate sustainability into the district's instructional activities and daily operations. The Baldwinsville Board of Education recognizes the importance of quality energy management and efficiency. The superintendent of the Buildings and Grounds Department hired an energy manager in 2006 with the primary goal of continuing the energy management program's success. Baldwinsville was an early participant in the ECAP software initiative in the late 1990s.
Baldwinsville Central School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Top Performer for achieving a portfolio-wide energy performance score of 92. To date, the district has avoided costs of $1.5 million and avoided annual greenhouse gas emissions of more than 200 metric tons, the equivalent of planting 48 acres of trees every year! In 2005, Baldwinsville began benchmarking each school building with EPA's Portfolio Manager tool with the goal of creating a baseline of annual energy consumption upon which to improve. Baldwinsville Central School District has six ENERGY STAR labeled buildings, totaling 12 labels since 2006. The district celebrates its success through an energy awards presentation to the staff for each one of its ENERGY STAR labeled buildings.
