Hastings Independent School District (ISD) 200 in Minnesota educates approximately 4,800 students in six school buildings that represent 864,000 square feet of floor space. Hastings ISD 200 views energy efficiency as both an important opportunity to teach students about environmental protection, as well as a way to reduce operating costs. As a result, the district strives to save energy not only to maximize the funds available for instructional programs and support services but also to educate every student and employee about the environmental benefits of energy efficiency. Participating in the Schools for Energy Efficiency® (SEE) program and ENERGY STAR has provided Hastings Public Schools with many valuable resources and ideas that have enabled district employees to meet energy goals and to ensure that students are learning to be good stewards of the environment.

 

EPA has recognized Hastings Independent School District 200 as an ENERGY STAR Leader for increasing its overall energy performance by 10 percent. The district has eliminated emissions of more than 900 metric tons a year, the equivalent planting more than 200 acres of trees. On a cost basis, this represents a cost avoidance of approximately $65,000 per year for the district. Hastings ISD 200's success in improving energy efficiency began with a commitment by the superintendent who formed a district-wide energy committee to develop and implement a set of comprehensive energy guidelines. A couple of key elements of the plan were to make all staff aware of where and how energy is consumed, ways to avoid wasting energy in classrooms and fresh campaign posters each year. Successful energy reduction measures have included:


  • Delamping all three- and four-bulb light fixtures down to two lamps and all two-lamp fixtures down to one lamp throughout all corridors 

  • Lowering all heating set point during the heating season

  • Raising the temperature during cooling season where applicable

  • Rescheduling air handlers to run only when areas are occupied

  • Increasing staff awareness of energy-saving potential by turning off and unplugging electronics when not in use
