Through systematic energy management upgrades and recent lighting retrofits, the Iowa City Federal Building and US Post Office in Iowa City, Iowa, has achieved excellence in building performance and the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings.
The Federal Building, built in 1972, houses a multitude of Federal Agencies, including military recruiting stations, offices of the Social Security Administration, as well as those of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Over the course of the last several years, the General Services Administration has implemented an overhaul of the energy systems at the Iowa City Federal Building, including lighting retrofits and the installation of two 150-ton chillers (a cost of approximately $675,000), an ozone generator, and a Johnson Control Metasys® Building Automation System (a cost of approximately $50,000). The Metasys System acts as an "HVAC brain" for the building, allowing the sharing of data and operating information between connected portions of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning components in the building, thereby allowing for a more efficient operation of these systems.
