Midlands Data Center
Cosentry's Midlands Data Center (MDC) opened in January 2010 to support the global demand for high performance data centers. Midlands was designed to withstand the region’s harshest weather conditions while delivering unmatched reliability in power, cooling, and connectivity at a low cost. Design specifications included an uptime of 99.9999% and efficiency ratings 50% greater than traditional data centers.
Cosentry MDC achieves world class efficiency through design & best practices. Midlands is designed to leverage the temperate climate of the North Central U.S. for three season “free cooling” and each of the data center suites is 20’ long, deck to deck, to facilitate efficient air movement within each suite. The design includes; three-foot-long raised floor, hot aisle/cold aisle containment, 12’-long floor tile to ceiling tile space, and 5’-long return air plenums. Computer room air handlers (CRAHs) are installed in separate rooms with return air extensions to plenum to isolate water piping from computer room raised floor areas. A 100% blanking panel policy as well as sealing all floor penetrations assures air recirculation and bypass air flow are not present in the data center. All motors including CRAHs and air handling units (AHUs) are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs), allowing for motors to ramp up and down as needed to save energy use.
Audits are conducted quarterly to assure optimal efficiency: power systems meter calibrating, raised floor static pressure testing, air quality sampling, cold aisle vent tile CFM sampling, infrared temperature sampling, calibrating temperature sensors, chiller efficiency testing, and temperature sampling of all critical power equipment.
Advanced monitoring of all power and cooling equipment gives operators a real-time look into the data center efficiencies. Trends are examined daily to verify that all equipment is performing as efficiently as possible.
