The Frito-Lay North America headquarters is located in Plano, Texas. Built in 1985, the 550,000-square-foot facility is situated on more than 280 acres. Frito-Lay has consistently endeavored to reduce its impact on the environment from a corporate standpoint. This facility is no exception. Frito-Lay has implemented multiple energy use reduction strategies at the headquarters facility to reduce its carbon footprint.

The facility?s management has upgraded the chiller plant with two new 750-ton, high-efficiency chillers that save approximately 975,000 kWh annually without the use of ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants. Management also installed nine 125-horsepower, premium, high-efficiency HVAC fan motors, resulting in an annual energy savings of approximately 220,000 kWh. In the kitchen, new hood control systems reduce daily kitchen hood energy consumption by 40 percent. 

To improve the energy efficiency of lighting systems, management installed an extensive lighting control system that saves approximately 266,200 kWh per year, converted all of the indirect lighting in the public areas and cafeteria to LED, and replaced all LCD monitors with more energy-efficient LED monitors. Management also installed a solar thermal hot water system that saves the site approximately 150,000 kWh per year. 

Finally, management implemented a campus-wide printer reduction program to eliminate 90 percent of personal printers, resulting in an annual energy use reduction of 438,000 kWh. This also prevented the emissions of 450,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

At the culmination of all of these energy projects, the facility was awarded 2009 LEED Gold certification, and was awarded ENERGY STAR certification for 2010 and 2011.

Communications:

The Frito-Lay Headquarters facility instituted a campus-wide educational program to inform employees and visitors about the successes of the sustainability and energy reduction programs. Information is displayed on energy-efficient monitors placed in key public areas. Frito-Lay also holds an Eco Fair every year to promote sustainable goods and services.
