Crumley Hall, located on the Denton, TX campus of the University of North Texas, is a 3-story, all-female residential building housing 240 women, as well as Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Services staff members. Crumley Hall was built in 1961 and consists of a brick construction exterior, a plaster-covered interior, and a roof with an ENERGY STAR qualified aluminum coating.
The steam boilers were replaced with three 1500MBH condensing type hot water boilers along with a plate and frame heat exchanger for domestic water heating. During the building's heating months of November through April, the building heating hot water return loop will provide all of the energy required to heat the domestic water from a city supply temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The gas-fired domestic water heaters will not consume fuel during November through April. The installation of a ?free cooling? heat exchanger will allow the building to be cooled without running the chiller. Using the cold cooling tower water to provide cooling to the chilled water loop, this device will automate controls to allow chiller shutdown, relocate valve positions, and control the tower fans to provide the proper set point temperature water to the air handler units.
Other energy conservation measures include the installation of variable frequency drives (VFDs). The VFD-controlled motor saves energy by electronically scaling back the voltage needed while still meeting demand. LED fixtures and wall packs as well as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were installed on the interior and exterior. The total cost of ownership of LED and CFL lighting is further reduced by the 15,000-50,000 hour lamp life. Open cell urethane foam attic insulation was installed at Crumley Hall. The insulation was blown into the attic at a thickness of 5 inches or more, which gives it an R19 rating. Utility bills are significantly lower now that older windows have been replaced with energy-efficient windows. We installed single-hung windows with a thermal barrier and glazing. The frame is aluminum with a Low-E glass.
Achieving the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance at Crumley Hall means to us that the recommendations that were made and modifications that were completed actually provided the savings that were quoted. We are proceeding in the right direction, and we know based upon performance that we are being fiscally responsible.
