The district's energy reduction rate is now at 19.3 percent. The Canon City School District includes nine schools as well as three auxiliary buildings, encompassing a total of 650,000 square feet. These buildings range in age from 1925 to 2006 (built year). Some of the energy efficiency projects the school district has undertaken include extensive preventative maintenance, use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling, thermal storage, lighting retrofits, and new insulation to improve building envelopes. As an active ENERGY STAR partner, the district has been engaged in benchmarking, tracking energy consumption, and understanding energy use within each building. Canon City Schools has reached an average ENERGY STAR rating of 90 for the 10 buildings within its portfolio, earning the district recognition as a Top Performer, and four of the nine schools earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2009. The Canon City School District is the first school district in Colorado to receive this prestigious level of recognition from EPA and ENERGY STAR.
In 1998, Lincoln Elementary School completed a lighting retrofit that included T-8 lamps with electronic ballasts. In 2004, the school completed mechanical upgrades, including a high efficiency boiler as well as direct digital controls (DDCs). Starting in 2007, the school implemented a start/stop time optimization, which cut out, on average, one day per week for each air handler. Lastly, in 2010 a 100KW solar photo voltaic (PV) system was installed at the school.
