building

In 1995, senior managers of Albuquerque Indian Hospital determined that our building, built in 1934, was in need of a major renovation. Our energy manager used this opportunity to make energy efficiency upgrades to our hospital's building systems with the goals of improving patient comfort and saving money.

Because of the age of our 60,000 sq. ft. hospital, it was difficult to keep acute care services, lab, radiology, optometry, pharmacy, behavioral health, and diabetes clinics operating throughout the renovation. But, with full support from our senior managers and an informal energy team made up of facilities engineers and managers, our energy manager successfully completed the following renovations:

-Installed T8 lighting throughout the hospital;
-Installed a centralized fresh air system to deliver air to each floor. Each floor has air re-circulating fans; and
-Installed a ground-source heat pump system made up of 60 heat pumps that deliver tempered air to each area of the building.

We also installed a Direct Digital Control (DDC) system that controls all of the technologies in our building. The DDC system allows us to easily turn off equipment when a component is working incorrectly, and has earned us huge savings by troubleshooting systems. We are now considering the purchase of double-paned windows and the installation of a white, reflective roof with additional hard insulation.

A major focus of our energy efficiency effort is preventive maintenance and staff training. All of our mechanics were thoroughly trained on our DDC system and attend three training courses per year. Our mechanics look at the entire system each morning to identify trends and schedule preventive maintenance where needed. Our backup generator also receives monthly preventive maintenance and is tested annually.

Our hospital conducts annual monitoring and reporting of energy usage and efficiency measures. We also use an internal Web-based tracking system to chart our energy use and identify trends, which is based on records from utility companies. In addition to cost savings from reduced electricity and gas use and labor costs, better lighting, new flooring, new ceilings, and windowpanes have improved our patients' comfort.

Indian Health Services joined ENERGY STAR in response to a federal executive order mandating energy efficient buildings. We use Portfolio Manager to monitor energy use in our facilities, set performance goals, and determine which hospitals in the system are eligible for the ENERGY STAR. Our hospital earned the ENERGY STAR in 2002.

Communications:

We sent an area-wide newsletter regarding our receipt of the ENERGY STAR label to staff, other regional Indian Health Services hospitals, and Indian Health Services directors nationwide.

Testimonial:

"Our ENERGY STAR is an outward symbol of all the hard work Albuquerque Indian Hospital has done to improve the efficiency of our building from the installation of new systems to our stringent preventive maintenance and staff training programs."
-- Alex Martinez, Indian Health Services
