Ohev Sholom - The National Synagogue, is the first synagogue in the United States to earn the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s ENERGY STAR certification with an energy performance score of 75 on a scale of 1 ? 100. This was completed in March 2011.

Ohev Sholom has been working on the implementation of energy efficiency initiatives since 2007. The synagogue is an ENERGY STAR partner and a member of the Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light (GWIPL). Since GWIPL conducted an informal energy audit of the synagogue in 2008, the facility has been working on a number of initiatives to improve the efficiency and management of energy resources consumed.

The synagogue has focused on low cost and no cost efforts to improve energy efficiency. The key to their success was a focus on staff and congregant education and dedication to improving building operations. Specifically, to earn the ENERGY STAR, Ohev Sholom took the following actions:
