building

Ecology and Environment, Inc. (E & E) chose to emulate the design for their building from one of history's great architects, Frank Lloyd Wright. His concepts, designs, and influences can still be seen today throughout the Buffalo, NY, area. The belief of harmony with nature is an idea both shared by Wright and E & E. Therefore, when E & E's headquarters was built in 1988, the idea was to blend with the natural surroundings and to bring in the outdoors by incorporating natural themes, patterns, and ornament.

The facility is a two-story building with 64,200 sq. ft. and is located on a 100-acre nature preserve. E & E has developed the basic principles of green building design and sustainability, such as designing for passive solar heating, energy efficient building techniques, maintenance of healthy indoor air quality, and use of environmentally-sensible building materials. E & E's extensive atrium is the longest opening central atrium in western New York. The atrium is home to over 1,000 plants, which improve the indoor air quality, daylighting, and green atmosphere elements year round.

E & E has developed an overall sustainability program for our office, which includes energy usage, recycling, composting, carpooling, and landscape ecology. Our employees deserve a lot of the credit for earning the ENERGY STAR, because how they use the building has as much to do with sustainability as do some of the technical features of the building. Since 1999, E & E has seen a 35 percent drop in electric usage per employee without any decrease in worker productivity. The key to such success for us has been the change in people's attitudes. We have set up a variety of simple but effective green learning programs for employees to educate them on ways to save money and the environment at work and at home. The belief is that if an individual understands the basic ideas of sustainability and is aware of their actions, eventually such things as turning off the lights and recycling properly, will become part of their daily routine no matter if they are at work or at home. In addition to being good for the environment, this program is also good for the bottom line. The Green Office program saves E & E approximately $85,000 a year on utilities and other environmentally related costs at its Western New York facilities.

E & E's cafeteria, food waste is disposed of in organic receptacles, which later will be composted and used on our plants and landscape. Since 1973, E & E has paid employees to walk, bike, carpool, or use public transit to get to work. In addition, E & E now offers a raffle each month to carpool participants at all of our 26 U.S. offices. E & E's Buffalo Corporate Center has incorporated both wetland and upland habitats near the building. Grassland, wet meadow, forested, and emergent wetland areas are managed habitat types within the E & E landscape. E & E's integrated pest management program is designed to replace the need for traditional, persistent pesticides in the management of E & E's interior and exterior landscapes. The Green Office program has been both an environmental and financial success.

E & E provides Green program services to offices, schools, colleges and university campuses, hospitals, the hospitality and tourism industry, and retail complexes to assist in cost cutting through improved environmental practices.
