Founded in 1883, The Allen-Stevenson School has been dedicated to providing the very best elementary education for boys growing up in New York City. Its distinctive, enlightened, and traditional approach educates boys to become scholars and gentlemen.
The Allen-Stevenson School is located in the Upper East Side Historic District of New York City. The School moved to its current location in 1923. The building consists of five separate contiguous buildings that were combined to make one cohesive facility with a total floor space of 72,000 square feet.
In 2006, Allen-Stevenson completed a full renovation and retrofit. The modifications incorporated many green features as well as energy-related upgrades, while at the same time working with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure compliance with guidelines for historic buildings.
In partnership with New York State Energy and Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Allen-Stevenson took on the Authority's recommendations by installing new energy-efficient pumps, variable frequency drives (VFDs), energy-efficient boilers and chillers, and an indoor air quality program controlled by a robust state-of-the-art, computer-driven building management system. Upon completion, the system underwent a full commissioning.
The lighting in the facility was replaced with energy-efficient compact fluorescents, T5, and T8 fixtures. The lighting controls have been replaced with a Lutron lighting control system that incorporates dimming ballasts, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting.
The plumbing has been replaced with low flow fixtures and metered faucets to conserve water.
In 2006, The Allen-Stevenson School first benchmarked its energy consumption. Its ENERGY STAR energy performance score was just below the national average.
The building was then commissioned and equipment fine-tuned. A load-shedding program was installed to the building management system. As a result, the School reduced its energy consumption by 22 percent.
In 2008, the School was awarded the prestigious ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
That same year, Allen-Stevenson was certified Gold under the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC's) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Existing Buildings rating system, making it the first primary school in the country to do so.
Allen Stevenson has maintained this superior level of performance by continuing to earn the ENERGY STAR for five consecutive years, 2008-2012.
Educating the students to become more environmentally conscious has also been a big part of the school's greening efforts. Launched in April 2007, the Carbon Challenge is a hands-on learning opportunity for students to become aware of how to reduce energy consumption. For one week, the boys are challenged to reduce the school's energy consumption. This helps the students become aware of how small changes can make a big difference in the energy usage of the school.
Green Committees and Related Organizations
In September 2006, Allen-Stevenson launched the Committee on the Environment (COTE). The following spring, COTE inaugurated the first Earth Awareness event on Earth Day.
Allen-Stevenson parent, Peg Watson, launched the Green Schools Alliance (GSA), whose mission is to galvanize pre-K to Grade 12 schools' individual concerns about climate change and the environment into collective action to protect our shared future. There are now over 155 GSA Charter Members in more than 30 states.

-- Published a brochure on Allen-Stevenson's LEED-EB Gold certification.
-- Sent out a press release announcing Allen-Stevenson's LEED-EB Gold Award.
-- Holds an annual Carbon Challenge for the students and established the Middle School Green Project.
-- Presented the school's green efforts at the Green Schools Alliance annual meeting.
