building

The Fargo VA Medical Center has achieved energy efficiency by incorporating energy conservation measures into everyday maintenance and repair and construction projects over the years rather than investing in one or two large projects. The 450,000 square foot facility consists of one large four story health care building and 15 support buildings. Staff have improved wall and roof insulation, decreased window infiltration, improved lighting levels while reducing lighting energy consumption, and improved motor efficiencies without decreasing occupant comfort and safety.

Opportunities to increase the Medical Center's energy efficiency are actively sought and identified with the support of partners like EPA's ENERGY STAR. Fargo considers the total cost of a piece of equipment over its lifetime, not just the first cost, when purchasing new and replacement equipment and during the design of building systems.

Educating staff is a key element in the Fargo energy conservation program. The importance of employees' reporting thermostat and heating valve failures (rather than opening windows) and turning off lights, air conditioning, or equipment not in use is stressed throughout the year.

New construction incorporates energy-efficient technology to the greatest extent possible. Recommended wall and roof insulation is installed. Proper lighting levels, high efficiency lights, and user friendly lighting controls are built it. Control systems are upgraded and controlled by the central energy management system as systems are replaced.
