Westin San Francisco Airport
One Old Bayshore Highway
Millbrae, CA 94030
The Westin at the San Francisco Airport was built in 1987 and is owned by Starwood Hotels. Beyond earning the ENERGY STAR, our hotel has won the Waste Reduction Awards Program award for the last 10 years and has been recognized by the Governor of California for excellence in energy management. In order to build on our past successes, we have continually investigated and pursued energy performance improvements. Recently, Starwood sent an energy management consultant to identify even more opportunities for our facility. Some of the more advanced features of our hotel include:
Lighting: The hotel uses T-8 lighting with electronic ballasts. We have reduced the number of dimmable lights based on guest usage in order to use more energy efficient lighting in those locations. We are currently in the process of changing all exit lights to LEDs. Energy efficient neon lights are used for various signage around the hotel. Most importantly, our lighting is tied into our energy management system- giving us more central control for energy savings in lighting and immediately informing us when a problem arises.
HVAC: Our hotel has no chillers. Instead, we use 550 separate heat pumps of varying sizes distributed throughout the hotel. These heat pumps provide all heating and cooling for the hotel. Even a central fan system is not necessary because our fan load is taken care of by the heat pumps themselves. While this approach would not work in many areas, our mild weather means that we can take this distributed approach to HVAC, saving a great deal of energy and money.
Energy Management System: Our computer-operated energy management system ties in the lighting, heat pumps, and even our pool and spa into one central system. The EMS is linked to our main computer network so that when a guest checks out, the HVAC in their room is powered off, to be powered on again when a new guest arrives. All refrigeration and HVAC is water-cooled, which gives us much more control over the energy consumption associated with the hydronic loop. The hotel also uses energy efficient motors in the cooling tower.
We incorporate energy efficiency features into guest appliances as well. Our guest mini bars have no fans and no motors. They use a tiny element heater coupled with an Ammonia cooling system which makes them remarkably energy efficient. We are currently investigating other opportunities for the Westin at San Francisco Airport including cogeneration, fuel cells, and progressive boilers.
To ensure that our advanced systems are continually working at peak efficiency, we have brought Energuard Technologies on board to put monitoring systems on the utilities used in the hotel. These systems transmit usage data to a central energy monitoring facility. When aberrations in usage are identified, Energuard notifies us and steps are taken to identify the cause. The Westin at San Francisco Airport was selected as one of Westin's beta sites for this technology. Based on the success here, Westin is now using Energuard's services at several of its hotels.
Professional engineering certification for our Energy Star Label was provided by Servidyne Systems, LLC.
We communicate with other departments about our energy efficiency efforts on a regular basis, both to announce our successes and to enlist their help. Daily interdepartmental operations meetings allow us to inform other departments about any changes in our procedures and to ensure that our efficiency efforts in no way diminish the comfort and enjoyment of our guests.
"We are the first Westin hotel to receive the ENERGY STAR label. We have already received congratulations and positive comments from many of our guests. It is our goal to continue to pursue the well-aligned goals of operational excellence, guest comfort, cost savings, and environmental protection."
