In 2009, the Douglas County Courthouse became the first courthouse in the state of Georgia to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. Located approximately 20 miles west of Atlanta, the Douglas County Courthouse opened in 1998 and houses most of the functions of the County government. It also acts as a cultural center, hosting events, festivities, and concerts designed to bring residents together and maintain the County's unique identity.
The Building Services Department has improved the courthouse's energy performance by managing energy strategically and making cost-effective improvements to the facility. The following are some of the actions the courthouse's building maintenance team has taken to help earn the ENERGY STAR:
? Installed occupancy sensors in public restrooms and other areas where lights are more likely to be left on when not in use.
? Installed fluorescent and compact fluorescent lighting throughout the courthouse instead of incandescent bulbs.
? Closely monitored any overtime HVAC requests to reduce hours the system runs.
? Continue to maintain all equipment to operate at maximize efficiency.
In addition to retrofits, building occupants and cleaning staff also contribute to the building's efficiency. The facilities manager sends email reminders to everyone to turn off lights when leaving and asks occupants to schedule times if they are working afterhours or weekends so that building systems can be programmed to minimize waste.
The Courthouse is one example of Douglas County's commitment to sustainability. The County was recognized for being a bronze-level "Green Community" by the Atlanta Regional Commission. Among its sustainability efforts are efficiency requirements for new city-owned buildings, expedited plan reviews and permitting for sustainable building designs, municipal building retrofits to improve energy and water efficiency, and synchronized traffic signals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.
