Southwest Church of Christ (SWCoC) in Chesterfield, VA is comprised of 250 members who discovered a perfect piece of land for a new facility in the 2001. In 2002, the congregation was presented with conceptual drawings of the facility for the 20-plus acres.

Southwest's building committee and leadership elected to work with Arks Incorporated, a Raleigh, NC, consulting firm dedicated to working with churches of all sizes that seek to build or expand their facilities. Arks helped the congregation assemble a financial package to present to potential lenders. Financing was secured and a bidding process resulted in the selection of Rawlings Wilson, an architect/engineering firm based in Richmond, VA.

Construction of the facility was completed in 2005. Research into EPA'S ENERGY STAR program helped SWCoC develop and maintain a focus on energy efficiency and energy cost savings. SWCoC used several of the no-cost tools and resources offered by ENERGY STAR, including the congregations? guidebook "Putting Energy into Stewardship."

Based on strategies the SWCoC building committee developed using the ENERGY STAR program, the building was insulated to R-32 and energy-efficient windows were installed. The building utilizes energy-efficient lighting, including T8 bulbs and electronic ballasts, while the HVAC system uses energy-efficient heat pumps. In order to control heat gain from the sun, blinds were installed during finish out. Energy-saving efforts have continued since construction. SWCoC established a policy for purchasing and installing ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and equipment whenever possible. The most recent undertaking was for the A/V team to implement software programs to manage energy use for computer and audio/video systems.

SWCoC has established a "Green Team" under the direction of the Facilities Ministry Leader. Daily monitoring of energy usage and management, water usage and management, and waste stream reduction and management are part of the ongoing examination of energy factors. The group also calculates the impacts of the congregation's activities on air, water, and land. Reducing toxic substances, implementing environmental education, including care of creation topics in worship and prayer, and using organic products are also part of the team's areas for oversight.

Recognizing that environmental impacts and energy consumption can be minimized with regular maintenance, the Green Team has established a maintenance checklist including a monthly schedule of maintenance activities that are conducted by church member volunteers. The activities include cleaning and changing HVAC filters; cleaning condensing units; monitoring for water leaks; using T8 and compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs; maintaining weather-stripping; landscaping with native plants to reduce/eliminate the need for watering; eliminating the use of toxic herbicides and pesticides; composting yard waste and leaves; and conducting environmental audits of our activities. Other improvements include recycling metals, plastics, paper, glass, and electronics, and eliminating the use of Styrofoam plates and cups at church functions.
