The Burlington Banking Center in Burlington, MA, is the smallest facility in the nation to have been awarded the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance, having earned the label in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008.

Cambridge Savings Bank has followed a multi-pronged approach to optimizing building efficiency. When we renovate or build a banking center, we try to use high-efficiency equipment. Our maintenance staff, in conjunction with our mechanical maintenance contractor, performs regular tune-ups of the HVAC and controls systems. The old lighting system was causing employee complaints about glare and visual discomfort. We were able to install new fixtures that both save energy and provide better lighting for the modern office. The electric utility, NStar, paid for 80 percent of the project cost. The return on investment (ROI) on the bank's portion of the project was 3.1 years, saving $4,500 annually.

Conservation Saves Bucks, our energy awareness program, has been a key part of Cambridge Savings' energy management strategy. We combine employee education with contests and rewards to make energy-smart behavior a part of every employee's workday. The result has been a 19-percent reduction in energy usage over a 5-year period.
