Fed Bldg & US Crths
515 W First St.
Duluth, MN 55802
The Duluth Federal Building and US Courthouse in Duluth, MN, contains offices for more than 20 federal agencies, including the US Post Office. It is appropriate that a Federal building housing so many different Federal agencies should also exemplify the national commitment to energy efficiency. The building, constructed more than 70 years ago, recently achieved the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings, a recognition that it is among the most energy-efficient buildings in the United States.
The building, built in 1929, has 134,710 square feet of office space for its 142 occupants. The General Services Administration (GSA), which owns the building, has implemented energy-efficiency retrofits over the years to make the building less costly to operate.
The most recent energy efficiency measure involved the retrofit of 900 highly efficient T-8 fluorescent lamps and 513 electronic ballasts. That retrofit alone saves nearly $8,000 annually in energy costs. The cost of installing the new lamps was reduced by a rebate from the local electricity utility, Minnesota Power. Past energy efficiency measures involved the installation of an Energy Management System, the careful scheduling of equipment maintenance, and the installation of occupancy sensors to turn off unneeded lights.
Leion Witte of the GSA said that energy efficiency upgrades and retrofits in the building have been a concern of the GSA for years. "When I first got here, the building had already had a lot of work done of it. In the 3 years I've been here, we've replaced 99 percent of the lights with T-8s."
This commitment to the national goal of increasing energy efficiency in Federal buildings explains why the Duluth Federal Building & US Courthouse achieved the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings.
