Aviano Hospital is a 21-bed acute care hospital located in Aviano Air Base, Italy. The 3-story hospital provides inpatient and outpatient care, general surgery, internal medicine, and orthopedic and OB/GYN services to the 9,200 active duty personnel and their families on base.

Since the hospital opened in July 2006, many opportunities to implement energy savings initiatives have been identified in construction/renovation as well as maintenance and repair.

To reduce energy use, the Aviano Hospital executed both no-cost and energy-savings projects. No-cost energy-saving initiatives included the following:
-- Monitoring/de-lamping interior illumination
-- Raising the chilled water set point
-- Upgrading direct digital control (DDC) software
-- Setting back admin air handling unit
-- Changing indoor temperature
-- Installing light sensors in restrooms

Energy-savings projects included:
-- Replacing air handling units as part of free cooling system
-- In-house spot cooling
