Green Valley Elementary School serves grades K-5 and houses 49,484 square feet. Green Valley places especially high importance on literacy instruction. Four times a year, Kindergarten classes hold parent sessions in which the parents can come into the classroom and observe lessons being taught. Afterwards, they can discuss those lessons with a literacy coach, who can explain how those lessons are tied to Indiana Academic Standards, and how they can supplement literacy lessons at home.

Green Valley was the first school in Indiana to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. In 2000, Green Valley led a corporation-wide push to intensify energy efficiency efforts with the addition of a new, two-pipe unit ventilator system. This award-winning innovation was nicknamed "back to the future" because of the way in which its creators used new technology to vastly improve an outdated design. This addition and increased efficiency efforts, encouraged and aided by school administration, accelerated the existing energy management practices of the corporation and included many exciting developments. Partnering with the ENERGY STAR program, all of the schools in the corporation began working to earn the ENERGY STAR individually. Green Valley earned its first ENERGY STAR in 2002. This was the result of efforts such as remote scheduling of all of the air units, inside lighting, and outdoor parking and security lighting with the use of Andover Continuum, an integrated automation system. This system ensures equipment reliability, keeps operating costs down, and allows for efficient use of resources.

Technology was only one part of these improvements. Classroom energy audits identified areas that could be improved. The corporation began tracking utility bills in a new program, Metrix, and sending out monthly reports to building operators and administrators to promote constant awareness of energy usage. Student and staff education encouraged good habits such as turning off unused lights, unplugging unused electronics, and simple awareness of waste. These small but powerful actions are a part of everyday life in the New Albany Floyd County School Corporation. Through education and accountability, staff and students have become conditioned to these habits.

Green Valley Elementary has found EPA's ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management to be extremely helpful in its goal of reducing the use of natural resources and avoiding expense to the corporation. In the spirit of progress, Green Valley and the other schools and buildings in the program are working toward the ultimate goal of ensuring an environmentally friendly corporation for the benefit of students, staff, and the community.
