building

The Forrestal Building, built in 1970, serves as one of 2 main headquarters facilities for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).  It is located at 1000 Independence Ave in Washington DC.  The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) owns the building and has delegated the authority to operate and maintain the building to the DOE.

The Forrestal Building, with a site energy intensity of 93kBtu/ft2, uses over 40 percent less energy than the average office building. That translates to preventing over 28 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year - all while saving taxpayers thousands of dollars in energy bills.

Over the years, the DOE facilities management team has worked hard to upgrade the building and make it a top energy performer through such initiatives as:

?         Installing energy efficient motors in the building's air handling equipment;

?         Replacing chilled-water and hot-water pumps with high-efficiency units;

?         Consolidating local area network rooms into central computer areas, thereby reducing computer equipment air-conditioning requirements;

?         Constructing photovoltaic solar arrays on the Child Development Center roof, the South Building wall, and Earth Day Park;

?         Installing and optimizing automated HVAC control systems for better indoor temperature control; and

?         Using an array of energy efficient lighting options (low watt fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescents, and LED lights) to update lighting in many areas across the building includingall office space, the cafeteria, the main lobby, elevator cars, janitorial closets, emergency exit signs, and outdoor lighting.

Forrestal now joins DOE's other Headquarters facility in Germantown, Maryland which earned the ENERGY STAR in 2002. As of June 2008, the Forrestal building is one of only two federally-managed and operated office buildings in all of Washington, DC to have earned this distinction.

Not content to rest with this accomplishment, DOE HQ continues to strive toward improving its energy efficiency.  Most notably, DOE recently signed a contract with SunPower (a leading solar company) to install a 205 kw photovoltaic solar system on the roof of the Forrestal Building.  Once complete in late summer 2008, this system will generate about 200 megawatt hours of electricity to the building each year.
