BAE Systems GNY Building 1
450 Pulaski Road
Greenlawn, NY 11740
When the Electronic Systems Energy Management team at BAE Systems in Greenlawn, NY first began tracking the campus' energy usage with EPA's Portfolio Manager in 2008, Building 1 initially received an energy performance score of 57.
Throughout 2008 and 2009, the team executed major energy-reduction projects that were identified by its globally-recognized utility cost take out (UCT) audit process at the Greenlawn, NY location. Energy- and cost-saving projects with short payback periods were identified, and plans for completion were put into action. Among these projects, a major lighting retrofit was completed, which replaced all overhead lighting with high-efficiency ballasts and 25-watt bulbs. These retrofits reduced electrical consumption for lighting in Building 1 by more than 37 percent.
The implementation of a sophisticated Building and Energy Management System (BEMS) also realized major reductions in energy usage. Complex scheduling algorithms have been implemented to maximize lighting and HVAC and equipment off-time, as well as provide load shedding and real-time peak-demand management capabilities. The BEMS is not only used to manage power consumption on a daily basis but also allows BAE Systems to easily participate in demand response events to assist the grid when there is an electrical load crisis. The capabilities of the BEMS also positions BAE Systems to participate with SMART grid technologies implemented in the future.
Employee engagement has also been a major factor in the reduction of energy consumption in the building. Training programs have been implemented to train all employees in energy reduction practices, and employee awareness celebrations such as Earth Day and Energy Day get all employees involved in the sustainability effort.
Through the successful completion of UCT projects and smart energy management, Building 1 has increased its energy performance score to an 89.
