building

Located in the central business district of Wichita, KS, the U.S. Courthouse is a steel and concrete structure with beige limestone exterior. The facility is on the National Register of Historic Buildings and houses the U.S. District Court, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Postal Service, and offices for several other agencies.

The U.S. General Services Administration is dedicated to reducing energy consumption and continually improving the Wichita Courthouse's energy performance. GSA re-sequenced chiller start times to avoid peak load times and high demand hours. The agency also replaced metal halide lights with efficient compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) and increased motion sensor lighting throughout the facility.

GSA replaced the Wichita Courthouse's black EPDM roof with a light-colored, well-insulated modified bituminous roof. Energy misers were also installed on building vending machines. Consultant firm Teng recently conducted an energy study at the Wichita Courthouse. The firm recommended upgrades, actions, and practices to improve facility energy efficiency.

These and other energy improvements decreased the building's overall energy usage by 2.7 percent from 2008 figures.

As for the future of energy in Wichita, GSA will replace oversized steam boilers with appropriately sized, high-efficiency hot water boilers. GSA will also install advanced metering devices and high-performance air handling units with variable frequency drive (VFD) motors. This equipment will improve the agency's ability to track energy usage trends and will provide better environmental controls in tenant spaces.

Upgrades are also proposed for elevator controls, elevator machine room air conditioning equipment, and photo sensing exterior lighting controls.

These and other improvements are expected to receive approximately $5.15 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding.

GSA continually works with tenants and contractors to reduce energy consumption. Operating federal buildings in accordance with ENERGY STAR building specifications shows GSA's commitment to leadership in energy efficiency.

Communications:

GSA uses quarterly tenant board meetings to stress the importance of reducing energy consumption. GSA posts energy-saving tips throughout the building and encourages tenants to turn off lights and equipment when not in use. Agency management also ensures custodial contractors employ energy-saving practices.
