Target has long invested in the health and sustainability of our communities by integrating rigorous programs throughout our business that reduce our environmental impact. From how we build our stores to the products on our shelves, environmental sustainability at Target is integrated throughout our business.

The Chicago South Target store, located at 8560 S. Cottage Grove Ave., opened in 2002 and achieved the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2010. This 102,000-square-foot, fully-insulated building features several elements that led to the ENERGY STAR, including:

System management: Target uses an energy management system (EMS) to optimize the operation of HVAC, refrigeration, and lighting equipment. This system allows Target to manage the store's energy performance and consumption and quickly identify areas for improvement.

White solar roof: The store has a white solar reflective roof to reduce cooling needs.

Lighting: To save energy, Target retrofitted four-bulb fixtures with two-bulb fixtures throughout the store and equipped guest areas with automatic controls to shut off lights after-hours.

Refrigeration: Target's energy-saving programs in stores with expanded fresh food include high-efficiency refrigerated cases, LED lighting, anti-sweat heater controls, and motion-activated technology to reduce lighting when guests are not present.

Regular maintenance: Target has dedicated teams to ensure the ongoing performance of HVAC, lighting, and refrigeration systems and continuously explore energy-saving options.

The Chicago South store also features sustainability initiatives available in Target stores nationwide. Target's in-store recycling program, launched in 2010, is a comprehensive guest-facing recycling program that allows guests to recycle cans and bottles, plastic bags, and small electronics. Target also offers guests a 5-cent discount for every reusable bag used in its stores.

As part of a holistic approach to sustainability, Target has a strong partnership with ENERGY STAR, focused on the energy efficiency of its buildings and the products it sells. In fact, a typical ENERGY STAR labeled Target store is 35-40 percent more efficient than an average U.S. retail store.
