Washington, DC 20037
The United States Institute of Peace is the independent, nonpartisan conflict management center created by Congress to prevent and mitigate international conflict before it escalates into violence. The Institute?s LEED Gold-certified headquarters in Washington, D.C. stand at the northwest corner of the National Mall. Designed by Moshe Safdie, the building is organized around two atria fanning out from a corner entrance ? one facing the Potomac River, the other the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial.
The United States Institute of Peace was able to achieve ENERGY STAR certification through a series of energy saving features and retrofits. This includes the installation of a Building Automation System with adjusted start and stop times and additional monitoring points to control equipment more efficiently; the use of variable frequency drives on the motors of air handling units and other equipment; the use of economizer coils on air handling units (allowing their use without compressor operation). Building lighting was retrofitted with LED bulbs without compromising lighting quality. Operationally, building managers use ENERGY STAR tools to emphasize preventative maintenance and operational monitoring to ensure that building equipment operates at full capacity and maximum efficiency.
