The Robert V. Denney Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse is a modern, 5-story steel structure in Lincoln, NE. It is named for the late U.S. District Court Judge and U.S. House of Representatives member. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Judiciary and District Courts serve as the building's primary tenants.

U.S. General Services Administration staff members at the Denney Courthouse are focused on energy conservation. Improved energy efficiency and reduced energy usage is a continuous process for the facility.

GSA recently installed high efficiency motors in the facility's elevators and upgraded the elevators' old tubes to electronic controls. Domestic water pump, condensate return pump, and sewage ejection pump motors were replaced as well.

GSA also made a key operational change. Denney Courthouse staff now phases the start-up of facility equipment to reduce the building's peak electrical demand and utility costs.

Additionally, one of the building's property managers earned the Building Operator Certification, Level I from the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. These certifications are awarded in more than 20 states to professionals who complete specific training objectives and demonstrate knowledge and skill in energy-efficient building operations and equipment maintenance.

As for the future of energy efficiency at the Denney Courthouse, GSA plans to install new high performance HVAC components, boilers, chillers, hot water pumps, and water-reducing restroom fixtures. The agency will also replace the air handling units' steam heating coils with new hot water coils. An overhaul of the building automation system will provide better control of lighting and electric heaters in garage spaces. A lighting retrofit, new cooling tower, upgraded energy management and control system, and low voltage transformers with harmonic mitigation round out GSA's energy plans.

These and other projects are slated to receive $2,935,000 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The federal government is the largest energy user in the United States. Operating federal buildings in accordance with ENERGY STAR building specifications shows GSA's commitment to leadership in energy efficiency.

Communications:

GSA uses newsletters and posters to inform Denney Courthouse tenants about energy-saving initiatives. Agency management also posts energy usage reports in the building's common area.
