The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service endeavors to reduce its energy use intensity through the sustainable design and operation of its buildings. The Administration Building and Visitor Contact Center at the Ohio River Valley National Wildlife Refuge exemplifies this commitment to energy efficiency. The building also provides a comfortable environment for visitors, volunteers, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees.

A geothermal system enhances the energy performance of the building, and a high efficiency furnace was specified to reduce the amount of fossil fuel emissions on the site. A programmable thermostat also enables occupants to optimally control when the system is used. 
 
Site lighting is kept to the minimum levels required for safety, which keeps energy use low. In addition, fixtures were chosen that direct light downward to ensure visual access to the night sky and to prevent the disruption of nocturnal animal habitats.
  

Occupancy and daylight sensors, day lighting strategies, and efficient lighting fixtures all reduce the amount of energy used for artificial lighting. Offices and the lobby space are designed with access to natural light and views to the refuge, connecting building occupants to the environment and minimizing the energy use required by artificial lights. Compact fluorescent, T8 fluorescent, and LED exit signs are some of the energy-efficient fixtures used.

Water efficiency is also addressed in the building. Plumbing fixtures with low-flow outputs were specified to conserve energy and water resources. Low-flow fixtures reduce the amount of hot water required in the building.

Communications:

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's energy awareness efforts include Earth Day activities and communications on energy efficiency and renewable energy. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will proudly display the ENERGY STAR in the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge Administration and Visitor Contact Station.
