Engineers at Glen Cove Hospital not only work hard, they think smart and act green. To combat high power costs and protect the planet, we've implemented effective energy strategies that have resulted in reduced energy use and greenhouse emissions that contribute to global warming. The hospital's collective efforts were recognized when it earned EPA's prestigious ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2009. Glen Cove Hospital's cost-savings resulted in $420,000 of the facility's $2.1 million annual energy budget.

The 265-bed hospital is home to the internationally known Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Institute, which features state-of-the-art programs in joint replacement and an all-inclusive spine program, as well as rehabilitative treatment in orthopedics, neurology, pulmonary medicine, cardiology, and generalized debilitation resulting from chronic illness. Our Emergency Department was recently ranked as one of the best in patient satisfaction among hospitals nationwide, according to Press Ganey Associates, the healthcare industry's leading independent vendor of satisfaction measurement and improvement services.

Built in 1950, the 372,650-square-foot hospital is the only one in the North Shore-LIJ Health System to earn the distinction, and is among eight other hospitals in New York State and 80 nationwide that have earned the ENERGY STAR. Hospitals that earn the ENERGY STAR use an average of 20 percent less energy than similar buildings and emit 20 percent less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than the average hospital in the country.

We have undertaken several projects at Glen Cove that resulted in superior energy performance. One of the most impressive is that we use water from the deep aquifers under Long Island to help cool the building instead of cooling towers. We've also implemented the following:

 

-- Equipment upgrades and construction projects have been designed and implemented with a high regard for energy efficiency.

-- Glen Cove, with help from North Shore-LIJ, upgraded the steam distribution system by installing valve and pipe insulation and refurbishing system components, installed water conserving bathroom fixtures, and upgraded controls that operate the heating and cooling system in the hospital.

-- The engineering plant is operated in an energy-efficient way while still maintaining proper comfort and lighting levels.

-- The Engineering Department has been 100 percent compliant with all regulatory and health system requirements for maintenance, which has a major impact on the operations of all major energy-using equipment.

-- Energy-efficient equipment upgrades and conservation efforts included boilers, air conditioning units, piping, electric motors, windows, new construction, roofing, plumbing, and lighting.

 

While there's no formal energy management plan, we monitor the energy use of all of our hospitals and target our energy conservation efforts by comparing the energy use indices of all 13 hospitals within the North Shore LIJ Health System. We started aggressive energy management practices in 2005 as we embarked on a system-wide energy conservation program that involved a performance contract with H2O Applied Technologies. Glen Cove Hospital was included in this program.   

 

Recently, we've entered into another system-wide performance contract with Johnson Controls. It addresses more sophisticated energy conservation measures that entail developing a plan for each of the hospitals. We're examining the redesign of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, the use of combined heat and power, superefficient lighting upgrades to super T-8 lamps, and upgrading building management systems. We're installing solid state burner controls which have yet to be widely adopted in the United States.    

 

In addition to earning the ENERGY STAR, we are a member of the New York City Mayor's Challenge, which stipulates that we will strive to reduce our energy use by 30 percent over the next 10 years.

 

Frank Porretto, energy manager for Glen Cove Hospital and the North Shore-LIJ Health System, noted the important benefits of improving energy efficiency: "Not only do our energy conservation efforts improve our operations and benefit the environment but the associated savings in energy costs can help us enhance our patient care."

 

Joseph Palumbi, director of facilities engineering at Glen Cove Hospital, agrees: "Hospitals operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and they use heat and cooling year-round for patient care. Because they continuously need power, there's a strong incentive to be energy efficient."

Communications:

We issued a press release when we earned the ENERGY STAR and the local newspapers wrote about our energy management efforts. We've also featured our efforts in the North Shore LIJ Health System's employee newsletter. The ENERGY STAR story was featured in Glen Cove Hospital's community newsletter, which is distributed to approximately 40,000 homes in the area. Also, local and healthcare trade publications picked up the story.
