Alpharetta High School exemplifies a well-designed and constructed building that is operated in a conscientious manner. Alpharetta is one of seven high performance high schools that have opened in Fulton County School System since 1996. The foundation for Alpharetta's outstanding energy performance is a building design that incorporates best practices in all building systems, ranging from building envelope to lighting to heating ventilation, air conditioning, and controls. The building designers, Perkins+Will Architects, in partnership with Spurlock and Associates, are committed to adopting proven, cost-effective energy efficiency strategies. The efficient building systems are further assisted by the sustainable manner in which the school staff operates the buildings. Lights are turned off in unoccupied areas and HVAC systems are only operated when required for building activities.
Alpharetta High School is the top-rated school of 41 school buildings in Fulton County School System to earn the ENERGY STAR in 2008. This remarkable commitment to energy efficiency applies to both new and existing buildings. In addition to building efficient new schools such as Alpharetta High School, Fulton County School System has renovated several schools using funding from a Special Local Option Sales Tax. The renovations have incorporated many of the same best practices applied to the new schools, including technologies such as high efficiency water source heat pumps, high efficiency boilers, variable volume pumping, desiccant-based energy recovery units for outside air supplies, variable volume air supply systems, occupancy sensors, day-lighting, and reflective roof surfaces. In 2000, the school system completed a system-wide lighting retrofit that converted all fluorescent lighting from magnetically ballasted T-12 lamps to high efficiency electronically ballasted T-8 lamps and replaced most of the incandescent lighting with T-8 or compact fluorescent lamps.
Fulton County Schools is committed to good stewardship of natural resources and the taxpayers funding through the operation of efficient buildings while maintaining high levels of building occupant comfort.
