The faculty and staff of Austin D. Baltz Elementary School pride themselves on their belief in lifelong learning and helping each student excel academically, socially, and behaviorally to achieve success and fulfillment.  As part of Red Clay Consolidated School District's comprehensive process to evaluate its facilities, the staff and community of Baltz Elementary School worked with the district to evaluate the facilities and recommend significant upgrades to the building's internal systems.

An ENERGY STAR partner since 2007, the district invested over 9 million dollars in recommended energy efficiency improvements.  There were two broad energy-related areas: 1) the ventilation systems, including air-conditioning, heating, and air circulation (particularly in rest rooms and faculty rooms) and 2) electrical upgrades, including correcting inefficient lighting in large classrooms and hallways and installing additional outlets in various areas of the school for better power supply throughout the building.  Funds of over 4 million dollars were invested in other miscellaneous interior improvements.

ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management were followed throughout the design and procurement of these major capital projects.  As a result, the school earned the ENERGY STAR in 2008 for superior energy efficiency.  Data compiled through Portfolio Manager continue to help verify that these improvements maximize the use of the school's energy resources.

Testimonial:

"Baltz Elementary takes to heart today's ongoing energy conversation and the necessity to change with everyday proactive actions.  We applaud Baltz's consistent and dedicated staff who take the extra moment to see each window is closed, the lights are out and that kids grab an extra sweater for winter months."

-- Jennifer Shields-Russell, Principal, Austin D. Baltz Elementary School
