Heights elementary - Alamogordo
2400 10th Street
Alamogordo, NM 88310
Located in south-central New Mexico, the Alamogordo Public School District (APS) serves a population of 40,000 with 6,300 students and stands at an elevation of 4,350 feet above sea level. Originally built in 1956, Heights Elementary School houses 37,215 square feet of space and serves 310 students. Prior to its efficiency efforts, the school used refrigerated cooling, which is very inefficient in the area's high desert climate because high desert temperatures can cause an excessive load on mechanical equipment.
In 2005, the district's energy services company (ESCO), Energy Control Inc. (ECI), completed a retrofit of the direct digital control (DDC) system and lighting, which replaced T12 fluorescents with efficient T8 lamps and electronic ballasts.
In 2008, ECI completed a full-scale electrical and mechanical retrofit including heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) control equipment. The project also included installation of a bore field and partial installation of ground-source or geothermal heat pump (GHP) system for temperature control covering approximately 80 percent of the campus. The GHP system incorporates water-source heat pumps designed with larger condensers to accommodate for wider temperature swings on the ground loop, as well as higher efficiency compressors. A direct digital control (DDC) system was installed to provide classroom control and tie into the district LAN for extended operability and measurement and verification, while allowing interoperability with legacy controls. The DDC system provides individual classroom control for a high level of student/teacher comfort.
A 2009 HVAC project Phase II completed the GHP system and included the installation of energy recovery units, which enhance the system's efficiency. A retrofit of the control systems to the portable buildings and a 20-ton heat pump for the Cafetorium were also part of the Phase II project.
Heights Elementary School saw a 35-percent drop in electrical consumption and an 83-percent drop in natural gas consumption. The building team also realized operational and maintenance savings by removing mechanical systems that were beyond their useful life and had excessive maintenance requirements. GHP systems simplify maintenance and operation requirements.
ENERGY STAR provides benchmarking analysis and measurement and verification of the energy initiatives. The school applied for and was awarded the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2010.
