The University of Arizona?s La Aldea Apartments offer a unique lifestyle. No other place on the university?s campus or in the City of Tucson offers single graduate and professional students the opportunity to live in a community of 300 incredibly talented scholars from all over the world. La Aldea's proximity to academic resources and campus facilities helps residents maximize their limited time and energy. Plus, major public transit routes are just outside the door. In short, La Aldea residents enjoy the best of both worlds: they have access to countless social and academic activities within the building and just outside its gates.

Constructed in 2003, this more than 184,400-square-foot facility began as a private venture, but was then acquired by the University of Arizona's Residence Life department.  The apartments have worked within the on-campus housing system ever since.

A number of features help La Aldea to be an efficient building, including compact florescent lighting, perimeter daylight controls, and water-saving toilets.  The maintenance staff members have also included a boiler tune-up. The biggest energy saving feature, however, is that students independently control the temperature of their apartments.  This puts the onus of energy savings onto the students, and they have proven to be environmentally aware and willing to conserve.

To help further improve energy efficiency at La Aldea, Residence Life partnered with an Architecture faculty member Dr. Nader Chalfoun, who is a professor for Sustainable Design and LEED certification courses and is also known as the ?House Energy Doctor.?  He and his students organized an energy audit of the building. Not only testing for the EPA required ventilation, illumination, and thermal comfort levels, they used specially designed instruments to discern energy saving renovation suggestions for the building. With this information, Residence Life can move forward to make the building even more energy efficient.

Communications:

Residence Life shared its certification story with local and on-campus news organizations. Stories ran in the University of Arizona?s ?Daily Wildcat? school paper and were featured on the Residence Life website.

Testimonial:

?Residence Life is pleased to accept EPA's ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts. Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs.?
