The Quality Inn and Suites is a 30,000-square-foot, 60-room hotel located in Sequim, WA, on the Olympic Peninsula. The building is the anchor hotel for River Road Plaza, a four-acre retail development. The building was constructed in 2005 by D&K Construction of Montrose, CO, and is owned and managed by Wirta Hospitality Worldwide (WHW).
 
WHW believes in practicing sustainable tourism. By working with ENERGY STAR to enhance energy efficiency, WHW is furthering their goal of being better neighbors to the region. Energy efficiency is important in the Pacific Northwest where the majority of electricity is generated by large hydroelectric dams. Many of these dams have been forced to use less water in electricity generation for ecological and other reasons. Since new dam construction isn't considered an option, increasing energy efficiency is the only way to mitigate reduced electricity generation.
 
The first step WHW took was to benchmark energy performance at the Quality Inn and Suites by measuring the actual energy usage. WHW used EPA's Portfolio Manager tool to measure 2008 energy consumption. Portfolio Manager returned a baseline energy performance rating of 87, qualifying the building for the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.  WHW attributes this accomplishment to the building being designed and constructed to exceed all energy codes and requirements.

To save additional energy, WHW partnered with its local electricity provider, Clallam County PUD. Their first joint project was a building lighting retrofit. Under the PUD's Conservation Implementation Agreement, the district agreed to reimburse WHW for 70 percent of the cost of the lighting retrofit. The retrofit was completed in March 2009. PUD estimates that the equivalent of an entire month of building electricity usage will be saved by the lighting retrofit.
 
The second program in the Clallam County PUD partnership is the monitoring of a retrofitted device called an Energy Eye in the guest rooms. Common in European hotels, this infrared device senses if the hotel room is unoccupied and turns down the room's heating or air-conditioning to pre-set levels. A total of six rooms are being monitored by the PUD. WHW hopes to see a 5 percent to 10 percent improvement in room energy efficiency with the Energy Eye devices. If these savings are achieved, the device will be installed in all rooms in the hotel and recommended by the PUD to other hotels in the county.

WHW is promoting its vision of being a good neighbor through sustainable tourism to all its customers. WHW is sharing the results of the ENERGY STAR program with its parent franchise, Choice Hotels International. In 2008, WHW won an APEX (Award for Property Excellence) from Choice Hotels for being an Eco-Friendly hotel.
