The Saunders Hotel Group employs an Environmental Coordinator who is extensively educated on environmental issues. In an urban setting, our focus is on dramatically reducing resource consumption, while educating guests, employees and the community on environmental issues. Most of the planning and coordination for these efforts is managed through a Green Team. SHG works with managers and front-line employees to monitor the life-cycle impact of daily business practices, and discover additional opportunities to reduce our environmental footprint.
SHG's award winning environmental program includes the following five components:
� Implement innovative energy efficiency measures;
� Minimize solid waste through source reduction and aggressive recycling/reuse;
� Actively conserve water resources;
� Purchase environmentally friendly products and services; and
� Educate guests, employees, our competitors, and the public.
SHG focuses on energy efficient technologies and practices in lighting, HVAC, hot water, kitchens, and pools mostly with paybacks of less than 3 years. SHG monitors and reports monthly on the use of resources (natural gas, electricity, water and waste) to ensure that efficiency measures are innovative and effective.

We recognize housekeepers with the EarthKeeper Award, and recognize one department and individual employee with the Saunders Hotel Initiative to Nurture the Environment Award. SHG holds Green Team meetings with department heads General Managers to review goals and progress. External Communications SHG's environmental efforts have been covered in the New York Times, Center for New American Dream, Newsweek, Robb Report, Travel and Leisure, and USA Today. SHG has received environmental awards from President George H. Bush, ENERGY STAR, British Airways, NWF and Conde Nast Traveler magazine.
