Northern Elementary, located in northern Scott County, Kentucky, is an example of what can be accomplished in energy management using partnerships and collaboration to achieve a goal. In February 2010, when Scott County Schools started using EPA’s ENERGY STAR measurement and tracking tool, Portfolio Manager, for benchmarking the energy performance at each school, Northern Elementary had an ENERGY STAR energy performance score of only 23, which was the lowest in the district.
The principal decided that Northern Elementary’s score should not rank lowest, and, with the help of the students and staff members, had improved the score to 77 by December 2011. Northern has a teacher who leads a great student energy team, and she also leads the school energy team, which is composed of the head custodian, the school principal, another teacher, parents, community partners, and the district energy manager. The head custodian worked to tighten the building envelope by adding caulking and headed a major project that replaced all of the T12 lights with T8 lights, replaced all of the incandescent lights with CFLs, replaced the incandescent exit signs with LED exit signs, and replaced the old 400-watt metal halide lights in the gym with the new, 200-watt pulse start metal halide that provides much better light with less than half of the energy consumption.
Even though much work has been done to relight Northern Elementary, most of the savings have come from the changes in behavior that took place due to the work of the student energy team and the staff members. Lights are turned off, doors are kept shut, and equipment is turned off when not in use. Simple and no-cost measures have allowed most of the savings to occur.
