Located in the suburbs of New York City, Cross Street Elementary School was constructed in 1931 and serves approximately 200 students. Cross Street is one of three elementary schools in Mineola Union Free School District (MUFSD) that earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2009. The mission of the district is to inspire each student to be a life-long learner, pursue excellence, exhibit strength of character, and contribute positively to a global society.

As part of this mission and to save costs, MUFSD has a long-term commitment to energy conservation and sustainability. The district entered into a long term energy performance contract with Johnson Controls, Inc., which guarantees that the district will realize a significant amount of energy savings during the term of the contract. To achieve these energy savings, the energy team completed an extensive energy performance project that included efficiency upgrades to the district's lighting, heating, and ventilation systems, and building envelopes.

The following energy conservation measures contribute to the achievement of energy efficiency at Cross Street Elementary School:
