Charlestown Wine and Spirits is a more than 5,700-square-foot store in southern Rhode Island.
Designed to be Sensibly Green, the store marries traditional forms with energy-efficient technologies and building systems.
The building envelope is made of Climate-Block expanded polystyrene panels that are made to eliminate thermal bridging. A geothermal system heats and cools the store, including the beer coolers, by using the earth as its principle energy source; three 450-foot-deep wells tap into the earth's constant 50-degree temperature. Thoughtful placement of operable windows reduces the need for air conditioning and artificial light.
The commitment to environmentally friendly design extends to the two-acre building site.
Non-invasive native landscaping, permeable paving stones, and dark-sky compliant lighting contribute to low-impact development.
