Hope Christian Fellowship (HCF) began as a church in 2004 and has occupied several rental locations in its history. The ministry began because some believers saw a need for a church that was accessible to regular people with real needs. Their goal was to serve the South Jersey area as a place of worship and genuine Christian charity. In 2008, the church began sharing this building with the Beth Israel Congregation in Woodbury, NJ. After a few years of renting from Beth Israel, HCF purchased the building in June 2010. The facility is roughly 13,000 square feet and was built in 1962.

HCF felt the need to address energy usage because it believes that being responsible stewards includes conserving financial and energy resources whenever practical.

Before even buying the building, the church hired a local energy services company, IEPC, to track its energy use using EPA's Portfolio Manager software and to identify low-cost improvements that would reduce energy usage. IEPC put together a plan to reduce energy use by 30 percent within one year, and the church began making improvements as they were able. Because they did not own the building, the focus was on operational improvements and appliances. HCF replaced several appliances with newer more efficient models and communicated with the building team and everyone involved in ministry regarding the importance of managing energy use. The church got better at shutting off lights and equipment when services were over and making sure that all boilers, radiators, air conditioners, and refrigerators were properly maintained and in good working order.

Upon taking ownership of the building in June 2010, the church hired IEPC to implement the balance of the planned energy efficiency improvements. This included  replacing older thermostats with new ENERGY STAR programmable ones and by reducing the lighting loads with ENERGY STAR LED exit sign kits and energy-saving fluorescent lamps. By the end of 2010, IEPC was able to help HCF to reduce energy usage by 35 percent from the year before despite the fact that the church attendance increased by 36 percent over the same time period.

The building is now used for regular Sunday services as well as youth programs on Wednesday nights and various church activities throughout the week.
Since achieving the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance, IEPC has continued to identify and the church has continued to invest in opportunities and technologies to further conserve energy, such as replacement of 40 older single pane windows with new ENERGY STAR qualified double pane windows and replacing old window air conditioning units with ENERGY STAR qualified mini-split heat pump units for all the classrooms and hallways. These improvements should continue to reduce energy usage.

"I am very pleased that Hope Christian Fellowship has earned the ENERGY STAR for their efforts to conserve energy, and am even more satisfied that they will save enough on utilities in the first year to recover their entire investment made to earn the label." -- Brian Ott, Project Manager, IEPC
